Independent Senior Living Communities also known as Retirement Communities, are for persons aged 55+ who need minimal to no assistance.  This senior style of living is a great option for those seniors looking to downsize from a home.  Communities generally are apartment or condominium style and offer multiple services and amenities for a relatively low monthly cost.  Since this type of living is truly “independent”, assistance with daily living (ADL’s) such as dressing, bathing and medications are not provided.  Most residents are typically mobile and some still drive their own vehicles.  Most residents do not have major medical conditions that hinder their daily life.

It is important when looking at retirement communities to ask what features are included in your monthly cost.  Many Independent Senior Communities require a “Community Fee” or “Entrance Fee”.  This fee is often a set amount or will be equal to one month’s rent.  Independent Living Communities generally rage from $1,000-$4,000 per month.

Services and Amenities:

There is a wide variety of services and amenities differ from location to location.  Some Independent Living communities provide meals daily in a restaurant style dining room, while other properties do not.  Many communities will come with full kitchens or kitchenettes included in the rooms even if food is provided onsite.  In addition to food, other amenities include a full time activity director, maintenance, concierge and housekeeping.

While each community will differ in the services and amenities provided, below is a comprehensive list:

  • Gym
  • Library
  • Movie Theater
  • Beauty Shop/Barber Shop
  • Coffee Shop
  • Lounge
  • Swimming Pool

*Each community will vary on the services/amenities provided.

  • Concierge service
  • Meal preparation
  • Transportation
  • Housekeeping
  • Activities
  • Exercise classes
  • Emergency call systems

Medical Care:

You should not expect to find any medical care provided by the independent living property.  Fortunately for some, this has recently been a shift around the nation to introduce a hybrid care model.  A few properties around the nation are now bringing home health companies on-site to provide extra care as needed to their residents.  Please check with your local senior community to see if they have a 3rd-party preferred provider for in house medical services.
